DRGW 5371 Cheyenne 27 Jun 09

A profile and a paint scheme that no railfan can dislike!

The final Denver & Rio Grande Western unit to ever run the rails as seen in the summer of 2009. DRGW 5371 was retired on 5 Dec 08 and stored in UP’s Cheyenne Yard.

I knew this SD40T-2 was up in Cheyenne when I moved to Colorado, and I wanted to make sure I got to shoot it since it was only about a two and half hour drive away. I did some research and learned where it was parked in the yard and with the help of some sun angle software, I knew a later evening summertime shot would work best…all I needed was some sun and some time off.

Those conditions came together on the evening of 27 Jun 09 when I rolled into Cheyenne just shy of 5 P.M. local time. One thing I hadn’t accounted for was the quadrupple main track between me and the DRGW 5371. Turns out I had to wait an additional two hours after arriving before I had a clear, unobstructed shot of the beauty as numerous UP trains stopped and parked right in front of me!

But those blocking trains departed, and I shot as much as I could. I’m so glad I made this trip because less than two months later, the DRGW 5371 would depart Cheyenne for good and become a museum piece in Utah…
